Words from the Wise
Outgoing Chief of Staff: Claire Baney
What is the biggest lesson you have learned during your time on FLT? When stepping into FLT, I cared deeply about representing the ideas and voices of fellows in all spaces where decisions were made. I understood the unique opportunity to practice servant leadership at an early career stage – learning the leadership lessons that matter NOW rather than later. Throughout the last year, my fellow-fellows have confirmed my belief that amplifying voices matters. And to do this well, you have to be a self-compassionate leader. There were times when I was hard on myself, feeling as though I wasn’t doing enough. Ultimately, as leaders, we have to shift our lens to “what do I know to be true about my skills, about my mindset, and my execution.” From there, we can be both adaptive and show ourselves the self-compassion we deserve while building up our own resilience. Self-compassion and resilience create hope, and hope is one of the most beautiful things we can offer one another. I’m grateful to my incredible teammates and my FLT experience that supported me through this learning.
What is one piece of advice or hope you have for Dawson as he steps into this position? To Dawson, always know that you were elected for a reason. Each FLT team and individual leader reflects what the greater fellowship needs. Take time to understand that need, execute against those needs, celebrate achievements alongside your team and the fellowship at large, recognize your wins humbly, define success in your own way, and be a friend to others. This experience will teach you so much about others, about leadership and teamwork, and about yourself if you let it. Always let that light in. I believe so deeply in what you will accomplish.
Outgoing Director of Recruitment: Olivia Carrier
What is the biggest lesson you have learned during your time on FLT? The greatest lesson I learned was how to train, manage, and delegate tasks to a group of almost 150 people. There are so many layers of leadership, responsibilities, and deliverables that go into recruitment, and it was a fruitful opportunity to manage the entire fellowship. I think we created an efficient system that funneled communication and duties from the very top to the very bottom, it was a well-oiled machine.
What is one piece of advice or hope you have for Kaelyn as she steps into this position? For Kaelyn, I hope she confidently recruits for Evansville with a game and system that maximizes engagement and captures the best candidates. Enjoy every opportunity and obstacle, Kaelyn! Recruitment can be one of the most fulfilling initiatives in Orr Fellowship.
Outgoing Director of Continued Learning: Erika Marchant
What is the biggest lesson you have learned during your time on FLT? The greatest lessons I’ve learned from FLT include learning to humbly lean on my support systems and recognize and celebrate team members’ diverse skill sets. I’ve loved getting to learn from and alongside my amazing FLT and CL teammates, and I am inspired by them every day!
What is one piece of advice or hope you have for Amy as she steps into this position? As she leads the Continued Learning charge, my hope for Amy is that she truly finds joy in the initiatives and teams she serves. The value I’ve drawn from CL programming is a result of not only professional resources but also the friendships and connections cultivated along the way. I can’t wait to see how Amy’s vision and talents will propel CL even further – go get ’em, Amy!
Outgoing Director of Fellow Alumni and Engagement: Emma Ryan
What is the biggest lesson you have learned during your time on FLT? You have to accept that you won’t be good at everything. But that’s why FLT consists of seven people. You have to lean into what you’re good at and surround yourself with people who fill in the gaps. I’d also encourage you to tell someone if they’re good at something. It will make their day!
What is one piece of advice or hope you have for Emily as she steps into this position? Resourcefulness is an underrated skill! In this role, unique challenges and difficulties will come your way, but if you can learn to ‘figure it out,’ you’ll be unstoppable.
Outgoing Director of Community Engagement: Nicholas Roethlein
What is the biggest lesson you have learned during your time on FLT? There’s so much to be learned from everyone around you – you just have to watch (and listen) carefully. From coordinators to executives to fellow FLT directors, I’ve been able to pick up and adopt new tactical skills, unique perspectives, and so much more, all because I cared to listen and was open to learning from anyone and everyone.
What is one piece of advice or hope you have for Emily as she steps into this position? My one piece of advice for Emily would be to give your team agency to really get creative and push boundaries. It’ll be your job to steer the ship in the right direction, but don’t stifle innovation and improvement just because something has always been done a certain way.
Outgoing Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Eliana Sanchez
What is the biggest lesson you have learned during your time on FLT? Collaboration from all sides is one of the best ways to ensure the success of DEI work. You can never stop learning from others, and collaborating is the best way to guarantee inclusion.
What is one piece of advice or hope you have for Janet as she steps into this position? I hope Janet capitalizes on all the success and momentum she has thus far and continues to propel the mission of DEI in Orr Fellowship. Leaning and learning from others will be the best way to achieve this mission.
Outgoing Director of Marketing: Kendall Jordan
What is the biggest lesson you have learned during your time on FLT? I learned to be more confident in my vision and trust that I have the experience, determination, and support from my FLT and Marketing teammates to execute on it. I was consistently inspired by the unique strengths of each of the rest FLT members and the way each of them owned their roles.
What is one piece of advice or hope you have for Megan as she steps into this position? My hope for Megan is that finds this role as rewarding and transformative for her marketing and leadership experience as I did. It is challenging at times, but the ability to promote Orr Fellowship alongside a team of incredible peers is so fulfilling. I am confident she will thrive in this role!
