As an Orr Fellow and External Affairs Specialist at CenterPoint Energy, I had the meaningful opportunity to participate in the Mayor’s Block-by-Block cleanup in the Stringtown Neighborhood—an event that allowed me to proudly represent both organizations. Alongside other Orr Fellows, I engaged in community outreach by going from home to home, connecting with residents to offer no cost in-home energy assessments through CenterPoint’s Energy Efficiency team. These conversations helped homeowners begin the journey toward accessing energy-saving programs that could make a real difference in their daily lives.
While other Orr Fellows contributed through neighborhood cleanup efforts, I had the opportunity to engage directly with residents—bringing the spirit of Orr Fellowship into one-on-one conversations. Orr Fellowship’s focus on civic leadership and professional development helped me approach each interaction with empathy and purpose, creating space for meaningful dialogue around energy efficiency and community support.
One particularly memorable interaction highlighted the importance of genuine connection. Initially, the residents seemed hesitant and unsure about the value of our visit. As we explained that our goal was to help make their home more comfortable and affordable—without any cost or obligation—their perspective shifted. They became more engaged, asking thoughtful questions and ultimately signing up for an energy assessment. It was a powerful reminder that when people understand we’re advocating for their well-being, they’re much more open to exploring solutions that can positively impact their lives.
This outreach not only supported our mission to empower communities through sustainability, but also reflected Orr Fellowship’s dedication to civic leadership. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve in dual roles, amplifying impact and fostering meaningful connections throughout the Evansville community.
