Butler grad earns patent to help cochlear implant wearers fix longstanding issues with helmets

A newly patented innovation from Butler University graduate and Orr Fellow Ellie Howe is addressing a long-standing challenge for people with cochlear implants: finding helmets that fit comfortably without risking damage to the devices. Inspired by her brother Bart’s experience, Howe created Deaf Lids, a custom foam insert designed to make sports and recreation more accessible for thousands of implant wearers.
