INDIANAPOLIS-BASED ORR FELLOWSHIP PLACED 63 TOP GRADUATES IN JOBS AT 47 LOCAL COMPANIES
Largest Orr Fellowship class in its 16-year history
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Last week, an unprecedented 63 candidates were placed in jobs at 47 Indianapolis-based host companies through the Orr Fellowship talent pipeline. This is a monumental milestone for the Fellowship, which for many years has made a tremendous contribution to Indy’s business future. “This year’s Finalist Day involved 125 executives including over forty CEOs from fifty local companies of all kinds converging in one large space to interview 94 extraordinary college seniors. Throughout the long day of interviews, the energy was palpable and contagious. All involved knew they were part of something special,” said Karyn Smitson, Executive Director of the nonprofit organization.
Candidates hailed from mostly Midwest schools and were recruited based on academic performance, extracurricular involvement, grit, and demonstrated leadership potential. Scott Brenton, Co-Founder of Orr Fellowship, current Orr Board Chair, and VP of Ambulatory Services at IU Health said, “In many ways, the growth of Orr Fellowship has mirrored the growth of the high tech community in Indianapolis.” Since its inception 16 years ago, Orr Fellowship has placed over 400 Fellows in Indy. The program has become so competitive that it attracted nearly 1,200 applicants from 46 schools this year. Jenna Phillips, Orr Fellowship Director of Recruitment and Communication Associate at host company FHLBank Indianapolis said, “We saw heightened interest from out-of-state candidates as well as STEM majors looking to enter the business/entrepreneurial world. This is largely in part due to the name Indy has built for itself in the past few years.”
Over the course of a two-year commitment, Orr Fellows work full-time at their host companies in a variety of roles. Lauren Jamieson, Orr Fellowship Chief of Staff and Financial Analyst at host company ClearObject said, “There is something great about Orr Fellowship that you can’t even fully put into words. The Fellowship offers you the opportunity to learn, to lead, and to dive into this new stage of life with a community of people who turn into some of your best friends.”
In addition to full-time employment, Orr Fellows have access to senior executive leadership and mentorship, unique entrepreneurial curriculum, and community leaders. Fellows also participate in professional development seminars and philanthropic events designed to challenge and propel them toward careers of excellence. Brenton went on to say, “Now, as we excitedly begin to look forward toward the 500th Orr Fellow, we appreciate that our organization has changed nearly as much as Indianapolis’ vibrant skyline. Throughout, Orr Fellowship’s mission has remained the same … developing Central Indiana’s next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs. We’re proud to have been a part of this community’s growth, and ironically, it feels like Indianapolis & Orr Fellowship may just be getting started.”
